In this video you will be shown how to change a pad for a person by following a step-by-step process.

This is a two-person task. You will need someone to help you.

Keep the person as covered up as possible to preserve their dignity and keep them warm.

As you change the person’s pad, check for any sore, broken or discoloured skin.

Report any problems with the skin such as wounds or red areas to your manager or supervisor.

Step 1.

Get the things you need

• A towel
• 3 pairs of gloves
• A clean pad – a tab pad is the easiest type to use if the person is unable to get out of bed
• A rubbish bag
• The step-by-step guide
• Skin cream, as per the care plan
• Disposable wipes
• Hand sanitiser

Step 2.

Clean your hands.

Raise the bed to hip height if possible so you don’t have to bend over.

Put on gloves.

Explain to the person that you are going to change their pad. Continue to tell the person what you are doing, even if they cannot respond.

Step 3.

Undo the dirty pad at each side and tuck the front of the pad down, rolling it to contain any mess.

Step 4.

Use wipes to clean the genitals and the groin area.

Make sure to wipe from the front to the back and pay attention to the skin folds.

Place used wipes into the dirty pad.

Step 5.

Lift and bend one of the person’s legs. Holding the hip and the shoulder, roll them over onto their side.

Step 6.

While the person is being held safely by your helper, put a towel under the dirty pad. This will prevent the sheets getting dirty.

Step 7.

Clean the person’s bottom with wipes.

Step 8.

Put the used wipes inside the pad, roll it up and place it into the rubbish bag.

Step 9.

Remove the towel.

Remove gloves and clean your hands.

Put on a new pair of gloves.

Apply cream as instructed on the care plan.

Step 10.

Put on a new pad.

Put the pad alongside the person.

Tuck the pad under their bottom.

Roll the person onto their back.

Then roll them slightly to the other side to pull the pad out.

Pull the pad up between the legs and tuck it into the groin to prevent any leakage.

Finally, fasten the pad on both sides.

Step 11.

Remove your gloves.

If you raised the bed, lower it to a safe position.

After you have finished, you can clean your hands.
